Job Title: Injection Nurse

Organization: ICAP at Columbia University – Bronx Prevention Center
Seeking RN or LPN to work on an hourly basis for an HIV prevention clinical trial in the Bronx.

  • Duties include giving IM injections of a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)study agent or placebo to adult women enrolled in a double-blind, randomized clinical trial, and completing relevant case report forms.
  • Must have flexible schedule and be available to give injections approximately 6 times per month (approximately 6-8 hours per week), for 18 months duration.
  • Hours will be variable (scheduled at least 1-2 weeks in advance), but will always occur during weekdays 9am-5pm.
  • Current NYS license and experience administering IM injections are required.
  • Clinical research experience preferred.

GO Project Mission
The GO Project shapes the futures of low-income New York City public school children by providing critical academic, social and emotional support starting in the early elementary years. GO provides year-round educational and family support services to children who are performing below grade level and equips them with the confidence and skills needed to succeed at school, at home and in life.

GO Summer is a rigorous, five-week classroom program with a staff of certified teachers, specialists (Math, Reading, ESL and Speech), enrichment teachers, teaching assistants and numerous volunteer aides. Students attend five days a week from 9AM to 5PM for a full day of academic and enrichment classes. Class size is deliberately kept small with a maximum of 14 students. Each morning, students concentrate on intensive reading, writing, math, and test prep with a focus on the specific areas where each student requires improvement. In the afternoon, the students enjoy enrichment classes in subjects ranging from art and music to computers and physical education. GO Project’s content-rich, varied program helps build self-confidence along with academic performance.

Position Description
The GO Project is seeking a certified nurse for the GO Summer program. The nurse will provide medical assistance for students in grades K – 8. The program runs from July 7 to August 8, 2014. The hours will be 8:00am to 6:00pm for the first week and 9:00am to 5:00pm for the remaining four weeks of GO Summer. GO Summer uses the facilities and classrooms of the Grace Church School which is located at 86 Fourth Avenue.

The GO Project Summer Nurse will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Serve as the Nurse and “go to person” for all health related emergencies during GO Summer
  • Call “911” for any serious injuries or health related emergencies;
  • Supervise students with inhalers and nebulizers;
  • Distribute and monitor prescription medications that are authorized through the Permission to Administer Medication Form
  • Provide first-aid to any person with any minor injuries and/or illnesses during GO Summer;
  • Establish procedures to document all health services, notify parents of health issues and obtain necessary student medical information;
  • Serve as the “go to” person for GO Summer staff for any general questions and/or concerns and communicate these issues to the Director of Programs in a confidential manner;
  • Facilitate trainings for teachers as needed on topics such as epilepsy and diabetes.
  • Assist the Program Managers with special-projects, as possible.

Salary: $25.00 hr

Position Summary:  Under general supervision, applies basic medical principles and techniques.  Performs tests as directed by physicians.  Documents all vital signs, injections, lab orders, etc. Assist physicians with procedures. Inventory and stock as necessary. Clinical and clerical support to physicians, patients and the health center.


  1. Interview patient for reason of visit, current medications, past medical history, take and document vital signs including height and weight, etc in the medical record.
  2. Performs phlebotomy procedures and obtain cultures.
  3. Review and administer immunizations as ordered by a physician.
  4. Administer medication (oral and/or injection) as ordered by a physician.
  5. Start IV and administer IV fluids as offered by a physician.
  6. Placement and interpretation of PPD.
  7. Performs EKG’s pulmonary function tests, finger sticks via glucometer, obtain referrals and preauthorization’s, etc. as ordered by a physician.
  8. Review and processes lab requisitions and results within the electronic medical record.
  9. Educate patients, families and/or caregivers under physician’s orders.
  10. Assist physician with procedures (suturing, casting, etc.)
  11. Assist with research as assigned.
  12. Train healthcare students and new employees.
  13. Inventory supplies. Discard expired medications/supplies.
  14. Ensure reports and all test results have been received prior to patient’s arrival. (i.e.: .outside labs, diagnostic tests; consult reports, etc.)
  15. Maintains confidentiality and adheres to AHCC/FHCC HIPAA Compliance Program.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements: To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  Registered Nursing Degree. Two years experience preferred. *Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiac Card/re-certification can be obtained after employment.  Knowledge of blood test procedures; triage procedures and disposal of materials; lab reports; and training procedures. Skill in operation of EKG’s, audiometer, medical equipment and knowledge of electronic medical records. Ability to prepare patients for medical examinations and procedures; administer prescribed medications, via injection if necessary and provide instructions to patients, families, students and employees.
