Program Overview:

The Manhattan Experience Art of Drama Summer Program in New York City — steps away from Columbus Circle, Times Square, Central Park, and all that the city has to offer — is designed for undergraduate students who want to experience New York City's vibrant arts in the summer. All participants, regardless of course enrollment, are required to attend all co-curricular events, which are an integral component of the Manhattan Experience curriculum.

Some of the exciting activities include:

  • Visit current exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art, its affiliate P.S. 1, the Guggenheim, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art!
  • Attend theatrical, musical, and dance productions on and off Broadway, at the Lincoln Center Out of Doors series, and at the New York Classical Theater Company; and listen to jazz and poetry performances at Bluenote and the Bowery Poetry Club.
  • Explore the neighborhoods in New York City, including: Long Island City, Queens, where you will have a group dinner at a local Turkish restaurant; Chinatown, which will be followed by a walk across the historic Brooklyn Bridge; Chelsea, where you will tour a number of art galleries; and Soho for avant-garde theater and a farewell dinner at the renowned restaurant Mexican Radio.

Students will choose one or both of the following courses:

  • The Art of Drama (LITR 220) with Christopher Moylan:
In this course, students explore a variety of genres, styles and approaches in live drama, by attending numerous styles of theater, including tragedy, family drama, and musicals. Students will also see performances of dance, poetry and/or spoken work, and, possibly, opera, in order to break down the component parts of dramatic performance — voice, movement, acting, and production. Students will be provided with a wide introduction to the types, styles, and techniques that make up live drama. The course will also involve an introduction to the critical approaches that are applied to drama. To that end students will write reviews on the plays they see, and will be encouraged to read reviews and background material on plays and playwrights.

  •  Humanities (HUMA 210/220):
The Humanities component of Manhattan Experience will examine art, society, and business in New York city. The course will include discussion of the different neighborhoods in Manhattan as different spaces for presentation of self and understanding of community, with an emphasis on the special New York character of these places. Students will visit galleries, museums, neighborhoods, and cultural and economic institutions to see firsthand how the city operates and how it evolves as a world city. Assignments will range from a journal recording observations of the day to specific forms and tasks to guide and structure responses to events and places.

Coursework will be required in preparation for your arrival to New York. Detailed information will be provided upon application to the program.

Please note that each of these courses has a prerequisite: WRIT 151 or WRIT 161.

It is the student's responsibility to determine his/her home institution's policies regarding credit transfer.
