Responsibilities
New York Institute of Technology seeks a Web System Administrator. Under the direction of the Director of Web Services, the Web System Administrator will be responsible for the design, deployment, and ongoing production support for the college’s web infrastructure. The successful candidate will perform daily systems administration and management tasks to ensure proper operation of all web servers and systems; perform routine system administration tasks, including monitoring, reviewing, troubleshooting, and upgrading web systems; assist with needs assessment, solution formulation, design, recommendation, and implementation of hardware and software for all systems and projects. More specifically, the Web System Administrator will plan, design, install, configure, upgrade, and troubleshoot hardware, network operating systems, and software for web servers; apply patches/fixes; manage security and monitor system performance, file systems and local network; oversee all web servers; act as a liaison to other technical groups and interact with developers and users to install/configure services as needed; assist with planning and implementation of upgrades, new software and hardware installations; evaluate related hardware and software products and make recommendations for adoption; participate in the development and implementation of disaster recovery plans and procedures.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field and a minimum of five years of relevant experience required. Demonstrated proficiency with web server hardware and software (Sun Microsystems and WinTel servers, Solaris OS, Windows OS, Apache web servers) is required. Expert knowledge of Java, PHP, MySQL, SSL, load balancing, application/JVM tuning, TCP/IP, DNS, LDAP, firewall maintenance, and multi-tiered architectures also required. The successful candidate must possess a thorough understanding of networks and systems principles (including Windows 2003/2008 and Unix/Linux operating systems and its administration) and proficiency in Active Directory and LDAP, TCP/IP protocols and stack and LAN/WAN connectivity. Experience in installing, configuring, managing, and troubleshooting Apache web servers, MySQL, PHP, content management server (Drupal, Joomla!, Liferay) and strong knowledge of scripting languages (Perl, PHP, Phyton, Ruby) also required. Project management and experience with remote connectivity solutions preferred. Previous experience in a higher education environment is strongly desired. Must be available to work holidays, weekends and evenings and provide on-call coverage after business hours on a routine rotation basis and for special projects.
