Admission Requirements for Entry-Level DPT

 

For admission directly into the doctoral program applicants must possess a bachelor's or master's degree, and should have an academic record that includes a balance of coursework in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, including competency in English writing. Generally, to be competitive, applicants should have a GPA of at least 3.0 and science and math grades a C+ or higher. Other requirements include:

  • Proof of 100 hours of volunteer time;
  • An essay detailing your desire to pursue physical therapy as a career; and
  • Two professional letters of recommendation, with at least one from a licensed physical therapist. The recommendations must not be over 6 months old.

The Physical Therapy Admissions Committee will review completed applications and those who qualify will be invited to the interview process. The Physical Therapy Admissions Committee will then render the final admission decision.


Required Prerequisites for Students With a Bachelor's Degree:


Students must have satisfactorily completed the following courses at an accredited college with a grade of C+ or higher:

  • Two courses in chemistry with lab
  • Two courses in physics with lab
  • Two courses in biology with lab
  • One course in general/introductory psychology
  • One course in abnormal psychology
  • One course in college algebra/trigonometry
  • One course in statistics
  • One course in human physiology with lab

The application deadline is February 1 of each year.

The Department of Physical Therapy has been using the Physical Therapy Centralized Application Service (PTCAS) since August 1, 2008. For further information, please go to the PTCAS website www.ptcas.org. All applicants for direct entry into the professional phase of the program must submit their applications through PTCAS. Specific instructions related to the application process can be found at the PTCAS website.

Applicants to the preprofessional (prerequisite) phase must submit their applications through the NYIT Office of Admissions.
