Abu Dhabi Students Make Top 100 in Business Competition

Congratulations to students in the NYIT-Abu Dhabi School of Management who earned a Top 100 ranking for March 4-10 in the Global Business Strategy Simulation Game (GLO-BUS), a weekly competition among more than 3,000 teams from 156 universities worldwide. The online game is an exercise in corporate teamwork. Students run a digital camera company in head-to-head competition against other companies and learn how to make strategic decisions ranging from research and development, to marketing and sales, to production operations.

NYIT's "D Company" team participates in GLO-BUS as part of a business policy and strategy capstone course taught during the spring 2013 semester by Associate Professor Faisal Al-Khateeb, Ph.D. Students include Samah Ahmed, Kamal Oberoi, and Zainab Al Junaibi.

Campus Dean Represents NYIT at CamTESOL Conference

Garon Wheeler, Ph.D., campus dean at NYIT-Abu Dhabi, presented "Teachers' Perceptions of Students and the Effects on Student Performance" at the CamTESOL Conference, Feb. 23-24 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He was also an invited guest at the conference's Regional English Language Teaching Leadership Forum.

American Ambassador Visits NYIT Campus

The Honorable Michael Corbin, American ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (pictured center in blue shirt and yellow tie), met with students and faculty on Nov. 27 at NYIT-Abu Dhabi. He spoke about economic innovation and entrepreneurship, and exchanged views with the audience for more than an hour. Corbin, who has served in the U.S. Foreign Service in the Arab world 25 years, proved to be an informative, entertaining, and insightful speaker.

NYIT-Abu Dhabi Showcases Educational Programs at 2012 NAJAH Exhibition

Faculty, admissions staff, and students from NYIT-Bahrain participated in the 2012 NAJAH exhibition, a three-day informational event promoting the Middle East's leading educators, training opportunities, and careers. The exhibition on Oct. 16-18 attracted thousands of visitors, many of them students exploring university programs. NYIT business majors and interior design students met them and the latter displayed their creative work, explaining the processes involved. Faculty members also discussed NYIT programs with potential students.

Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan Addresses Class of 2012 at NYIT-Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (June 5, 2012) — "Our presence here today underscores the fact that higher education is an international undertaking," H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, the United Arab Emirates Minister of Education and Scientific Research, told graduates at NYIT-Abu Dhabi's sixth graduation ceremony. "It is your generation that must take up the banner of peace and preservation of human dignity and development of our local and global communities."

Sheikh Nahayan received an honorary degree at the ceremony, in recognition of his ongoing support and advancement of higher education, as well as his visionary leadership. Read More.

NYIT Dean Delivers Keynote at 4th Dubai Award For Sustainable Transport Ceremony

Dubai, U.A.E. (Feb. 14, 2012)—In her keynote address to attendees of the 4th Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport (DAST) ceremony, NYIT Dean of the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences Nada Marie Anid, Ph.D., praised the United Arab Emirates for their latest Green Development Strategy. Noting that "sustainability is both a social and a corporate responsibility," Anid encouraged the audience, which included Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of the Executive Council Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to lead the way with its mission towards a globally competent, green economy. NYIT-Abu Dhabi Students Pledge Commitment to Road Safety

Abu Dhabi, U.A.E  (Nov. 5, 2011)—As part of a month-long community strategy to educate Emirati students on the perils of driving irresponsibly, entertainment company Flash Entertainment invited students at NYIT-Abu Dhabi to participate in its “Yasalam Responsibly” road safety campaign. 

“The event hosted presentations and a mini competition where students answered trivia for prizes related to Formula One, Ferrari World, and music concerts in Abu Dhabi,” said Jan Wallace, director of operations and external affairs. 

Following the Yasalam team’s presentations on the consequences of speeding, not wearing a seat belt, talking on cell phones and texting while driving—the main causes of accidents and fatalities on the road—students signed the Yasalam Responsibility Pledge.

NYIT-Abu Dhabi Informs Thousands at Fifth Annual NAJAH Exhibition

Abu Dhabi, U.A.E (Oct. 20, 2011)—For three days, NYIT-Abu Dhabi staff and faculty members met with thousands of prospective students and visitors from schools, colleges, universities, and local and international companies at this year’s NAJAH exhibition, the Middle East's leading education, training, and careers exhibition.

The event provided a forum for NYIT employees to inform local and expatriate students interested in the value of NYIT’s global and local programs—particularly the design and implementation of the university’s bachelor’s degrees and newly designed and improved Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree.

“This ‘glocal’ approach expands the career opportunities for NYIT students—many Emirati and expatriate participants interested in studying in the United States were happy to hear about our extensive range of program offerings in New York,” said Jan Wallace, director of operations and external affairs.

Innovative Programs Win NYIT World Congress Asia Award

Dubai, U.A.E. (Sep. 30, 2011)—NYIT-Abu Dhabi Campus Dean Garon Wheeler, Ph.D., accepted the World Congress Asia Award for Best Educational Institute in Engineering on behalf of NYIT at the Sept. 25 World Congress Asia Awards ceremony here.

“It is an honor to be included in this distinguished group of universities from Egypt to Singapore, and it’s satisfying to see our efforts recognized on such a global scale,” he said.

The World Education Congress screened universities from more than 20 countries before deciding to honor the NYIT School of Engineering and Computing Sciences with the award for excellence in education, leadership, and teaching.

Class of 2011 Celebrates at NYIT-Abu Dhabi

NYIT-Abu Dhabi held its fifth graduation ceremony on June 9, 2011. The Class of 2011 included 65 graduates who celebrated along with guests including friends, family, and alumni at the Armed Forces Officers Club. Student speaker Daniella Melikian addressed her classmates following a graduation address by NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D.

Students at NYIT-Abu Dhabi Participate in International Design Challenge

Abu Dhabi, U.A.E (May 12, 2011)—Designs by students at NYIT-Abu Dhabi were featured at the annual Interiors UAE design challenge, a global interior design exposition and conference held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre on May 9-11. View the photo gallery.

Interiors UAE is the only annual interiors trade event held in Abu Dhabi. Over the course of two days, its organizers offer seminars on industry trend forecasts and best practices to designers and industry leaders from across the globe.

The event’s student design challenge is held annually in order to discover the region’s next generation of interior designers.

NYIT-Abu Dhabi Paves Way for Research Collaboration with Indian University

Tiruchirapalli, India (Jan. 18, 2011) – Building on a culture of global exchange, NYIT-Abu Dhabi recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with India’s Bharathidasan University (BU). The MoU serves as a step toward joint academic programs and a higher standard of research activities in commerce, management, and financial studies at the Indian university. Both universities hope to achieve these goals through an exchange of academic materials, research methods, students, and faculty members.

Stephen Blythe, J.D., Ph.D., professor of law in the School of Management, NYIT-Abu Dhabi, has been awarded a Ph.D. in computer law from the University of Hong Kong's School of Law. His dissertation was entitled "An Alternative Theory of E-Commerce Law."

NYIT-U.A.E. Signs M.O.U. with the British Council

Richard Pizer, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), and Richard Cotton, Country Director of the British Council, UAE, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to improve the level in English of students applying for admission to degree programs offered at the university.

NYIT was the first American university licensed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the capital of United Arab Emirates. The British Council has had representation in the UAE since 1968 and is the United Kingdom’s international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations. The Council is a registered charity, 209131 (England and Wales) SC037733 (Scotland), and builds engagement and trust for the UK through the exchange of knowledge and ideas between people worldwide.

Prospective students at the NYIT are required to attain an IELTS score of 6.0 or TOEFL paper-based examination of 550 in order to meet the criteria in English to gain admission to the university. Students that do not meet the criteria have the option of studying IELTS preparation courses or general English at the British Council. On meeting the required scores and other admissions criteria, students can progress with their education and register for the career-oriented, degree of their choice at NYIT; study at any of the NYIT campuses in Abu Dhabi, New York, Bahrain, Amman, Canada, or China; and look forward to making a significant contribution to local and global economies.
