Nutrition Expert Suggests Dietary Changes
Mindy Haar, Ph.D., RDN, clinical professor and chair for the Department of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences, was quoted in a Newsweek article about suggested foods to cut from one’s diet. She offered her advice regarding yogurt and protein products, recommending the disuse of protein powders, bars, and supplements, which can unnecessarily stress the kidneys.
“Protein does have calories and must be processed by the kidneys, so adding more than you need because ‘you’re working out’ or ‘it’s healthy’ makes no sense,” she says. For those who enjoy their daily cup of yogurt, she warns, “A serving of flavored yogurt may have the equivalent of five to six added teaspoons of sugar.”
The article also appeared in 28 regional outlets across the United States, including The Sun News, the Fresno Bee, and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
