Harper Quoted on New Public Health Findings From the CDC
Brian Harper, M.D., M.P.H., chief medical officer and vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion, spoke to Newsday about necessary steps in controlling sexually transmitted infections (STIs). While data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggest a national slowing of the STI epidemic, local rates may not be dropping yet.
“When it comes to STIs, you need workers on the ground,” says Harper, who formerly served as Suffolk County health commissioner and helped lead Nassau County’s HIV/AIDS and STI prevention work. “You have to be fairly aggressive to make sure you get people when they’re in the communicable stage.”
