Ask an Expert: The Keto Diet Explained in One Minute

April 9, 2019

The Keto diet is the latest weight loss method that promises to shed pounds quickly. Not so fast says Mindy Haar, Ph.D., RDN, assistant dean of undergraduate affairs in NYIT School of Health Professions and director of academic management, Department of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences.

Haar warns of the dangers associated with this quick way to lose weight. “A ‘keto’genic diet includes fewer than 50 grams of carbohydrates forcing the body to break down fat into ketones for energy instead of using the preferred carb-derived fuel,” explains Haar. “While this initially leads to rapid weight loss, consequences include headaches, constipation, dehydration, and/or bad breath.” Another side effect: The weight is almost always regained.
