NYIT Experts Take Over in a Minute

NYIT faculty members took over airwaves the week of May 28 on The Academic Minute, a segment that airs daily on Northeast Public Radio and that can also be accessed on Inside Higher Ed. “New York Institute of Technology Week” featured five faculty members who shared their latest research and expertise. NYIT joins other esteemed colleges and universities featured in this series, which asks faculty members to share findings that serve a greater purpose and contribute to the public good. Purdue University was the previous institution featured in a weekly takeover.
NYIT Week highlighted discoveries and discussion on cybersecurity, sustainable urban design, exercise physiology, occupational therapy, and criminology. Read more below:
- Monday, May 28: Emily Restivo, Ph.D., associate professor of behavioral sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, discussed the impact of solitary confinement on the mental health of juveniles who are tried in the adult prison system.
- Tuesday, May 29: Jeffrey Raven, associate professor and director of the graduate program in urban and regional design, School of Architecture and Design, explained why cities that reduce CO2 emissions while helping residents adapt to a changing climate are more likely to remain livable.
- Wednesday, May 30: Joanne Donoghue, Ph.D., assistant professor of osteopathic manipulative medicine, College of Osteopathic Medicine, revealed how eating less and exercising more can actually hinder metabolic rates in female recreational runners.
- Thursday, May 31: Kiran Balagani, Ph.D., associate professor of computer science, School of Engineering and Computing Sciences, weighed the benefits and challenges of biometrics–security features that identify users based on behaviors, such as keystrokes–to continue securing devices after a user is logged in.
- Friday, June 1: Melanie Austin, O.T.D., assistant professor of occupational therapy, School of Health Professions, examined the influence of daily social media use and its ability to affect the happiness of college students.
Since 2017, The Academic Minute has featured a total of 13 NYIT experts who have reached millions of influencers and other stakeholders, showcasing the university’s dedication to cutting-edge research and thought leadership.
