Make an IMPACT on your students!

We’ve been talking a lot about high-impact educational practices (HIPs) lately: what they are, why they matter, how to integrate them so that they become a defining feature of an NYIT education.

What are HIPs? If you look at the research, you’ll see that they can take many different forms: collaborative assignments and projects, extended research projects, exposure to other cultures and worldviews, service learning, internships, capstone courses, and others.

Despite the diversity of HIPs, they do share certain attributes. The most effective HIPs structure activities that challenge students to invest time and effort in a purposeful task, interact with faculty and peers, receive frequent feedback and guidance about their work, connect disciplinary content with real-world experiences, and encourage reflective writing.

What’s next?

Continue this conversation by joining your colleagues in a week-long discussion of HIPs and how we use them at NYIT. We will have the conversation asynchronously, on VoiceThread, so you can participate at any time and location that works for you. The workshop will run March 1–10. I want to redesign a course I teach!

Are you looking for more support? Join a small, interdisciplinary group of 6–8 faculty members who are similarly inclined! We will be sending out a Call for Proposals next week for a faculty learning community (FLC) that will begin at the end of this semester and run through the 2017–18 academic year. Each participant will redesign a course to incorporate HIPs. You’ll receive ample support from your colleagues as well as CTL staff as you develop your proposed project. Critically, your participation will also provide you access to a network of supportive colleagues who are also engaged in similar work.

Interested?

If you are interested in designing HIPs in your classes, we encourage you to apply! Look for a formal call for proposals on February 1, with proposals due no later than March 1.
