Ningbo Historic Museum

The Ningbo Historic Museum is an emblematic project, critiquing the normative modes of production of architecture, and supporting an alternative in China – for the re-establishment of a uniquely Chinese architectural culture, in which local history, customs and identity is paramount. The recuperation of collective memory and a revival of local, rural traditions is made possible by the meticulous reuse of recycled bricks and tiles for the massive facades of the Ningbo Historic Museum. Ultimately, a new relationship is formed by Amateur Architecture Studio between the architect and craftspeople on site, using unique working drawings techniques and 1:1 on-site prototypes to communicate the reuse of materials. This project makes connections between material, cultural and environmental sustainability, as a project of resistance against a global universal architecture.

This public event is part of Tom Verebes' ARCH 791 seminar class in the Master of Architecture (M.Arch) program, within a series titled: Beyond the Envelope.

This lecture is part of the series Beyond the Envelope organized in the context of the course ARCH 791 Beyond the Envelope: Pioneering Technology in Architecture, taught by Professor Tom Verebes.

Design Dialogues

In times of global crises, education, collaboration, and dialogs can represent positive “game changing” factors.

Through dialogue with international universities, industries, and practicing designers, the NYIT School of Architecture and Design Lecture Series will nurture dialogue on the education of the creatives of the future and will challenge the more conventional university curricula, and the narratives and communication strategies of the current professional practice.
