NYITCOM Named an Apple Distinguished School

The field of medicine is in a state of transition, with physicians increasingly called upon to leverage digital technology and find innovative ways to provide top-notch care. Before stepping foot in a clinic, future physicians at the College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM)—a medical school positioned at the intersection of healthcare and technology—leverage digital and mobile tech to gain a deeper understanding of the human body’s complexities.

On October 4, NYITCOM’s commitment to innovation was recognized when representatives from Apple came to the Long Island campus and presented members of the community—including professionals from the Academic Technologies Group, faculty, and student leaders—with the Apple Distinguished Schools recognition.

NYITCOM provides all first-year students with iPads, ensuring that every future physician has equitable access to the technology regardless of their background or financial status. Students utilize modern, powerful applications to gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for medicine. Outside of the anatomy lab, lessons are often supplemented with detailed 3-D models of the muscles, nerves, and bones, as well as augmented reality for a more immersive experience than flat images.

Medical students and staff alike both played a critical part in helping NYITCOM secure its Apple Distinguished Schools recognition. This included a white paper submitted by NYITCOM students Amina Sheikh and Alessandro Mercado, and another by Senior Development Security Operations Engineer Mihir Matalia and Senior System Administrator Michael McDermott.

Apple Distinguished Schools are celebrated as some of the most innovative schools around the world as they incorporate Apple technology in their classrooms to empower students to connect, create, collaborate, and personalize their learning. With this award, NYITCOM joins the company of prestigious medical schools such as Yale School of Medicine and Weill Cornell Medicine.
