In LoseIt!, Haar Discusses Staying Motivated During Weight Loss
Clinical Professor and Chair for the Department of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Mindy Haar, Ph.D., RDN, was featured in a LoseIt! article about motivation and weight loss. Haar shares insight into behavior strategies, noting that the key to staying motivated is setting smaller, realistic goals that ultimately lead you to achieve a larger goal.
“As a registered dietitian nutritionist for more than 40 years, I can attest through my interaction with hundreds of clients that maintaining a healthful weight requires long-term lifestyle changes,” she explains. “Thus, the slower, prudent loss of one to two pounds each week may take months or even years … the payoff is that with time, lifestyle changes and habits are more likely to become permanent with a long-term effect on weight.” She also stresses the critical nature of self-compassion. “When you may be less accepting of yourself if you feel you didn’t reach your goal, ask yourself what you would say to a good friend who had a similar experience.”
