Old Westbury, NY – Mark C. Hampton, Ph.D., a seasoned leader in higher education, has joined New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) as vice president for Planning, Analytics, and Decision Support.

He joins NYIT from Washington College in Chestertown, Md., where he was vice president for Finance and Administration. In this role Hampton reports to NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., and will oversee planning, assessment, accreditation, data governance, and institutional data reporting and effectiveness.

"There have been two major shifts in the past decade that set the context for my role at NYIT," said Hampton. "First, the technologies we use in higher education have matured and have been integrated to the point that the data needed for advanced analytics are ubiquitous. Second, higher education is being held to a higher standard for efficiency and business intelligence. Data analytics provide the tools we need to make informed decisions, to take calculated risks, and to engage our various markets in ways that track closely with demographic and technological change."

President Guiliano said, "Data alone isn't very useful; we want to know the relationships in the data. Mark brings strong credentials and experience that includes nearly 20 years benchmarking strategic plans and promoting effective use of data analytics."

Based on trends, society will use almost 17 times more big data by 2020 than today. "That fact will affect our students, teachers, and administration, in ways we can't see yet, and we look forward to Mark's stewardship and contributions to NYIT in this important area," Guiliano added.

Previously, Hampton held positions of increasing responsibility at University of Virginia, most recently as assistant vice president for budget and financial planning. He also served as senior associate dean for strategy and planning, and as associate professor, Department of Leadership, Foundations, and Policy, both in the university's Curry School of Education.

Prior to that, at Virginia Commonwealth University, he served as associate vice provost for strategic planning and directed the Center for Institutional Effectiveness, and was also director of institutional effectiveness at the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia.

"I envision the role of my department to provide leaders and decision makers throughout NYIT with the tools that they need to make informed decisions, and to work with them to ensure that they are asking the right questions," Hampton concluded.

He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in Mathematics and his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy from the University of Utah.
