Old Westbury, NY – New York Institute of Technology has launched a minor in health sciences that includes courses in a range of health-related subjects, including nutrition, aging, the healthcare industry, and ethics. The new minor, available this fall, is aimed at students who are not enrolled in health-related academic programs but are interested in working in various careers within the broad, growing area of health professions.

"This program relates important, relevant information that impacts everyone's professional and personal lives. Almost every undergraduate student can benefit by participating in the health sciences minor program," says Mindy Haar, Ph.D., NYIT's director of program development in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences. "For example, communication and English majors can enhance their ability to present information about health, wellness, and nutrition, while engineering majors will be better positioned when working with electronic health records, nutrition-related software, and health-related websites."

Offered at NYIT's Manhattan and Old Westbury campuses, the minor in health sciences requires enrollment in a Community Health Implications course and a minimum of four additional three-credit courses from a group of 13 electives. A substantial number of the elective courses are offered online, with a few offered exclusively at the Old Westburycampus. Course offerings include: Life Cycle and Weight Management; Exercise Physiology; Bio Medical Ethics, and Health and Aging. With permission, some students may take a graduate epidemiology course.

Careers in health-related fields have steadily grown in recent years. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected that healthcare and the social assistance industry will create about 28 percent of new U.S. jobs by 2020, a growth of 33 percent or 5.7 million jobs. NYIT's BS in Health Sciences at the School of Health Professions has doubled in enrollment each year it has been offered since 2010.
