Old Westbury, NY – NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine students will move on to residencies this summer at prestigious institutions including the Cleveland Clinic, Tufts Medical Center, and Georgetown University Hospital.

Nearly half of the graduates of the Class of 2013 will focus on family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics—the specialties commonly known as "primary care." About 68% of the graduates will remain in New York State hospitals for their residencies.

Nearly 99% of the 252 members of the Class of 2013 have matched to osteopathic (D.O.) and allopathic (M.D.) residencies. Among the other specialties they will pursue are: emergency medicine, anesthesiology, general surgery, obstetrics-gynecology, and neurology. Most of the students learned about their next steps through "Match Day" notifications in February and March.

"We have had impressive success in our students securing outstanding residency slots—in most cases their first or second choice," said Associate Dean of Clinical Education Abraham Jeger, Ph.D.

Among the students thrilled with the match results is Sijun Kim, who is headed to an internal medicine residency at what was his top choice: Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire.

"My desire to pursue primary care stems from wanting to be in the frontline of medicine where I can have a direct impact on the patient's health and quality of living," said Kim. "I will be uniquely positioned to help patients navigate through the growing and complex healthcare system while focusing on disease prevention, counseling, and practicing evidence-based medicine."

College of Osteopathic Medicine Dean Wolfgang Gilliar, D.O., said he was pleased with the results.

"While the Match Process is demanding on so many levels, it is also exciting to see where our students are going and what opportunities they carve out for themselves," Gilliar said. "As long as we educate competent, confident and compassionate physician leaders, we contribute to fulfilling our duties to the state and the nation."
