Nanjing, China – NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., challenged a delegation at today's International University Presidents' Forum to look beyond traditional rankings when measuring university outcomes.

"Ranking systems must continue to evolve and improve based on careful evaluation of their impact on universities and higher education systems," Guiliano said. "We can start by looking at a country's economic needs and how its higher education system meets those needs. "

In remarks that underscored the changing role of the university in global education, Guiliano stressed that universities should focus less on traditional ranking systems and more on ensuring that graduates possess the skills most associated with professional success: innovation, leadership, problem-solving, entrepreneurship, and the ability to work collaboratively.

"We need to look beyond borders to consider the global knowledge economy and the way our institutions are generating human capital that will meet its needs," he added, noting that graduates of NYIT's Nanjing program are employed at some of the biggest companies in China and the U.S., including IBM, China Telecom, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China Unicom, and China Mobile.

His audience included university presidents from China and Russia, as well as 2007 Nobel Physics Prize Winner Peter Grünberg. The delegation convened amid celebrations of the 70th anniversary of NYIT partner Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications (NUPT).

For more than 12 years, NYIT has maintained a presence in China through its academic programs, sites, and alumni base. NYIT was among the first universities to receive approval from the Ministry of Education to operate foreign degree programs in China, including its dual-degree management, M.B.A., and executive M.B.A. programs. Since 2006, NYIT has offered undergraduate degree programs in communication arts, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, and international business administration in a dual-degree relationship at the NYIT-NUPT program in Nanjing.
