New York, NY – NYIT medical and engineering students and faculty introduced young women to science and technology aboard the Intrepid last weekend.

The NYIT representatives at the Intrepid's Girls in Science and Engineering weekend gave demonstrations and showed off projects to more than 100 young people who roamed the vast museum and hands-on exhibits.

Visitors got a firsthand look at i-Stan, the new wireless mannequin used at NYIT's New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. The mannequin blinks, has a pulse and lung sounds, and can demonstrate reflexes, such as dilated pupils.

"We were able to tell them how we use the mannequin to teach medical students how to diagnose," said NYCOM Assistant Professor Dr. Michael Passafaro.

Students felt the mannequin's pulse in its wrist and foot and listened to heart and lung sounds. They also examined an X-ray of a broken bone.

"It spurs curiousity," Passafaro said of the hands-on demonstrations. "That was the whole reason behind the fair."

Students and faculty from the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences presented LEGO and Vex robots that can climb stairs and sort colors. They also demonstrated how sensors help a robot lift items.
