What are the advantages of being in the Honors College?

Honors College students gain additional experience in interdisciplinary, real-world problem-solving using a collaborative and project-based approach with the guidance of dedicated faculty. Honors college students have dedicated workspaces, resources, and faculty mentors to enable a rich learning community. Honors College students will receive a stipend for special projects outside of the classroom. Students will engage in exciting extra-curricular and co-curricular activities that will complement their academic lives and offer the opportunity for intellectual, personal, and social growth.

New York Tech is also a member of the National Collegiate Honors College which provides students with additional opportunities for growth, learning, new experiences, and collaboration.


Will being in the Honors College affect my plans to major in the field I choose?

No. The Honors College curriculum is completely independent of your major. It is designed to fulfill elective credits and will offer opportunities in real-world problem solving in an interdisciplinary, collaborative environment in addition to the knowledge you gain in your major. However, students in combined/dual degrees are not eligible for the Honors College. The combined/dual degree programs include:

  • Life Sciences, B.S./Occupational Therapy, M.S.
  • Life Sciences, B.S./Occupational Therapy, O.T.D.
  • Life Sciences, B.S./Osteopathic Medicine, D.O.
  • Life Sciences, B.S./Physical Therapy, D.P.T.
  • Life Sciences, B.S./Physician Assistant Studies, M.S.
  • Psychology, B.S./School Counseling, M.S.

What is the difference between an honors program (such as the Dean of Engineering Honors Program) and the Honors College at New York Tech?

The College of Engineering and Computer Sciences offers their own Honors Program called the Deans Honors Program (CoECS-HP), which serves students in that specific college. The Honors College brings together undergraduate students from across New York Tech to work and engage in extracurricular and community activities.


How do I apply to the Honors College?

We are currently accepting only incoming first-year students for the 2024–2025 class.

Once you have applied to New York Tech, you will get access to your personal Admissions Portal. In your portal, you will see an application for the Honors College. Complete the application, which includes an additional essay.

Steps to Apply

  • Apply to New York Tech via the Common App.
  • The Honors College application will open in Fall 2023 and will be available via your Admissions Portal.
  • The Honors College application will include a personal statement
    • For your personal statement, discuss one of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals that is meaningful to you. Highlight your community engagement, research, leadership, personal experiences, or future aspirations as you tell us why you are passionate about the goal you have chosen. Your personal statement may be submitted as a (written) essay (300–350 words), a video, or a podcast (3–3.5 minutes).
  • NOTE: If your major requires SAT/ACT scores, you will need to submit those scores as part of your admission. They are not required for consideration to the Honors College.

In addition, students who are in the College of Engineering and Computer Science Honors program are not eligible for the New York Tech Honors College.


Are there special events for Honors College students?

New students will participate in an Honors College Orientation and all Honors College students will be invited to an Honors College Convocation. Honors students will also engage in special events including field trips and meeting distinguished guests through the Office of Student Engagement and the larger New York Tech Community.


Who is eligible for the Honors College?

Students who have strong academic achievement and who have demonstrated leadership in community engagement, research, or personal experiences and are passionate about their future. College of Engineering and Computer Sciences offers their own Honors Program called the Deans Honors Program (CoECS-HP), which serves students in that specific college. CoECS students might also be invited to the Dean of Engineering Honors Program. You’re welcome to apply for both, but you will only be able to enroll in one. CoECS will reach out with more information

We are accepting first-time, first-year undergraduate students for the Fall 2024 semester. In the future, both continuing and transfer students may be eligible. Students pursuing a combined/dual degree are not eligible for the Honors College.

Is housing required for Honors College students?

Student housing plays a significant role in the life/work community of the Honors College. Housing is therefore recommended for Honors College students.


Are there scholarship and financial aid opportunities available for Honors College students?

Honors College students are eligible for all forms of financial aid, including federal and state aid, institutional scholarships, and grants.

Students can apply for stipends for summer projects through the Honors College. In addition, students are eligible for the Edward Guiliano Global Fellowship and the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Students can work with Career Success and Experiential Education Office to apply.

New York Tech is also a member of the National Collegiate Honors College where students can find opportunities for growth, learning, new experiences, and collaboration.


Are there any additional costs associated with being enrolled in the Honors College?

There are no extra fees associated with being in the Honors College.


What happens if I leave the Honors College before I graduate?

If for any reason a student decides to leave the Honors College before completing their degree, they must inform the co-directors that they are leaving. The student can proceed to earn their undergraduate degree, and to live in a residence hall, similar to other students outside the Honors College. A student living in a residence hall who leaves the Honors College mid-year will continue to live in their room until the end of the school year when the halls are typically vacated.


If I leave the Honors College before I graduate, will I lose my Honors College stipends and scholarships?

Yes, any funds reserved specifically for Honors College students will be forfeited. However, you will still be eligible to apply for other financial aid.


Do you have to be in a specific undergraduate major to be a student in the Honors College?

Students in any major are eligible to join the honors college, except those pursuing a combined/dual degree. Combined/dual degrees include

How will my application be reviewed?

We are looking for students who are curious, motivated, and passionate. We review applications using a combination of academic and personal factors, including your transcript and a written or oral personal statement that includes your extracurricular, community, and leadership activities. We will also review the letters of recommendation you submitted as part of your original application to New York Tech.


Is an interview part of the application process for the Honors College? Can I request an interview?

Currently, we are not holding interviews with prospective students


I did not take the SAT/ACT. Will this hurt my chance to get accepted to the Honors College?

No, standardized test scores will not be considered for admission to the Honors College. If your major requires SAT/ACT scores, you will need to submit those scores as part of your admission application to New York Tech.


Is there an application fee for the Honors College?

Students pay the standard New York Tech application fee. There is no additional fee to apply to the Honors College.

Does the Honors College only accept students who have a high GPA?

There is no GPA requirement to be accepted to the Honors College. See the FAQ: "How will the Honors College review applications?" for more information.


What are the requirements I need to meet to remain in the Honors College until I graduate?

In the Honors College, you are expected to be a full-time student, maintain good standing in your major, and show a satisfactory level of engagement in the activities and academic work of the Honors College. Full-time students are enrolled in courses, amounting to at least 12 credits in a semester, that apply toward their degree. Maintaining good standing in your major indicates that the requirements of the major are met, which depending on the program, could include earning a minimum GPA. The number of failed or withdrawn courses will also be considered. The Honors College curriculum includes both academic work and participation in activities outside the classroom and you will receive prompt feedback in both areas. To graduate with the distinction of the Honors College, you are expected to finish your senior project before graduation.


Is there a deadline to accept my spot in the Honors College once I am accepted?

  • February 15th: Honors College application deadline
  • April 1st: You will receive a notification if you’ve been accepted into the Honors College or if you will be placed on the waitlist.
  • May 1st: You must accept your admission with deposit.
  • The deadline to submit your deposit and secure your spot at New York Tech is Wednesday, May 1st.

Spots are limited, so priority will be given to those admitted students who confirm first.


Does applying to/being accepted to the Honors College bind me to New York Tech or am I free to consider other colleges?

We understand that our admitted students have many options. We ask that they submit their commitment to New York Tech and to the Honors College by the deadline provided in their acceptance letter.


How do I confirm my spot in the Honors College?

You will need to accept your spot in the Honors College in your admissions portal. Spots are limited, so priority will be given to those admitted students who confirm first.


Are international students eligible for the Honors College?
