About the Industry Leaders Lecture Series

Dean Babak D. Beheshti, Ph.D., New York Tech College of Engineering and Computing Sciences, hosts the Industry Leader Lecture Series, offering students and practitioners a chance to hear from and interact with distinguished professionals in the tech industry.

Working professionals and undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to attend and learn from these leaders’ insights. The series offers participants a unique opportunity to ask questions about career choices and hear advice and stories directly from experts in the field. All talks will be web-based.

Certifications will be awarded, by request, to New York Tech students who attend two of the three sessions during the fall semester.

Janet Campbell

Janet Campbell, President & CEO, BellaMia Technologies, Inc.

Janet Campbell is led by a strong desire to help others; her experience includes medical devices and venture capital. Campbell's latest venture is Bella Mia Technologies Inc., an aesthetics company that focuses on skin rejuvenation, a $6 billion global market. The company's product, The Botticelli® is a cart-based laser system that will address the resurfacing of the skin due to environmental and sun damage, wrinkles, and scars by using lasers to stimulate collagen and elastin regrowth, which diminish during the aging process. Campbell is BellaMia's Founder, President, and CEO.

Janet founded Dominion Aesthetic Technologies, where she assembled a team of world-class laser experts that created EON™, the world's first non-contact, no-touch laser body contouring robotic platform device. Janet’s team developed and commercialized more than 75 lasers for an array of industries, including the aesthetic market. Dominion has filed patents for the novel design of EON. She is also the founder and former Chairman and CEO of Seno Medical Instruments Inc., the San Antonio-based company that became the world's leader in research, development, and commercialization of opto-acoustics for cancer diagnosis, Imagio™ the first new functional imaging technology developed in 25 years. As CEO, she secured over $100 million in investment capital for Seno and oversaw Pre-Market Approval (PMA), including the largest diagnostic study ever conducted in the U.S.

Prior to her medical device experience, Ms. Campbell was the healthcare partner of Rockecharlie & Co., a Houston-based investment banking firm. Her venture capital experience includes the Woodlands Venture Fund (now Essex Woodlands), Vanguard Ventures, and the Susquehanna Group. Human Genome Science placed her as their board representative to Vascular Genetics Inc., where she was elected as Chairman of the Board. While residing in Maryland she was on the Board of Directors of the High-Tech Council of Maryland Incubator, a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Bioscience Committee, Jewish Federation in Washington, D.C., and she served as an Advisory Board Member for Incell Corporation Inc. Ms. Campbell was also a board member of the Griffiths Leadership Society for Women at the University of Missouri.

She is a board member of the Texas Business Hall of Fame, and a member of the Cosmos Club in Washington D.C. She is a graduate of the University of Missouri and earned her MBA in Finance from The Johns Hopkins University. Her alma mater, the University of Missouri, recognized her as Alumni of the Year in 2005 and she received the international Gold Stevie Award for Female Entrepreneur of the Year in 2013. Ms. Campbell was honored as one of the CEOs of the year by the San Antonio Business Journal. Janet was also featured in the Texas CEO Magazine as one of only 3 female tech CEOs ever profiled. Recently, she was honored to be selected as the Keynote Speaker for PALS (Patricia Adams Lecture Series) at Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio.


Mitch Maiman

Mitch Maiman, Co-founder, Intelligent Product Solutions (IPS)

Mitch Maiman is a co-founder of IPS and currently serving in a consulting role as a strategist in business development. IPS is a multi-functional product development professional services team serving many including Zebra Technologies, Becton Dickinson, Anheuser Busch, L3 Communications, Pepsi, Google, Verizon, and Steinway. Mitch’s present role followed a long, successful career at Symbol Technologies (now Zebra Technologies) where he served as Vice President of Engineering. Mitch has a long-established record of having built and run high-performance engineering organizations working in innovation-driven advanced development as well as technology product development.

Besides his corporate record, Mitch is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the Tesla Science Center in Wydencliff and is a long-term member of the Dean’s Engineering Advisory Board at New York Institute of Technology.

Mitch has a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University, as well as an MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He also has a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Science from Hofstra University.


Ryan McGann

Ryan McGann, Founder & CEO, CubicAcres, SWFTLabs

Ryan McGann is an engineer and entrepreneur for emerging technology ventures. He has founded, led, and advised several companies at a variety of growth phases such as InLoop Inc., an Israeli-based AI new software provider; Solar Cool Technologies, portable solar-powered refrigeration; and Intrigma Inc., an advanced healthcare software provider for optimized physician scheduling. For the past three years, Ryan has been dedicating his efforts to agriculture and sustainability. He wears the dual hats of Founder and CEO at two ventures, CubicAcres and SWFTLabs.



Tom Van Laan

Tom Van Laan, CEO of CloudCalc, Inc.

Tom Van Laan has been an entrepreneur for over 40 years, primarily focusing on the area of software for the mechanical and structural engineering markets. In addition to his M.B.A. from New York Tech, he holds an S.B. in Civil Engineering from MIT and an M.S. in Computer Science from Pace University and is a licensed Professional Engineer in three states. Tom’s career prior to founding CloudCalc was initially in engineering, working for firms such as Bechtel Power Corp, but he soon transitioned to the world of engineering software. He spent over 15 years as CEO of COADE, Inc. (a Houston-based engineering software company) until its acquisition. A recognized expert in the field of pipe stress engineering, he has taught courses on that subject in fifteen countries and also authored the best-selling text Piping and Pipe Support Systems, Design and Engineering.

Since selling COADE, he not only founded CloudCalc, a pioneer in the area of cloud-based engineering software, but has also been active as an investor (with investments in near startups) and served as a mentor to both technology incubators and individual companies.

Babak Beheshti

Babak D. Beheshti, Ph.D., Professor and Dean, New York Tech College of Engineering and Computing Sciences

Babak's experience in higher education spans over 35 years, where he has served as a full-time faculty member, president of the Academic Senate, associate dean, and dean. As dean, Babak led the engineering college to the introduction of its first two Ph.D. programs, in computer science and engineering, two new bachelor's degree programs, and one new master's degree program, in addition to leading the college through its fastest climb in national rankings: #33 Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs (National – no doctorate)—a climb of 13 places since 2020, and #191 Best Computer Science Undergraduate Programs (National – no doctorate), a new ranking in 2021—a climb of 40 places since 2020.

In line with the career-oriented mission of New York Tech, Babak has led the College of Engineering and Computing Sciences in building a strong partnership with industry and government organizations, including NASA, Zscaler, IBM Red Hat, Xilinx, Soter Technologies, and Zebra Technologies.
