Update Regarding Athletics Programs

August 20, 2020

Dear New York Tech Community,

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have significant impacts on higher education, as colleges and universities including New York Institute of Technology grapple with new challenges on a daily basis.

Since the beginning of this crisis, we have been carefully reviewing all of our programs to ensure the ongoing financial stability of our institution, resulting in some difficult decisions and cost-cutting measures. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the costs associated with it, today New York Tech decided to suspend all of its NCAA Division II athletics programs for at least two years.

This decision was not made lightly. We have a rich legacy in competitive sports and are proud of everything our student-athletes have accomplished over the years. We thank everyone involved in our athletics program for their spirit, dedication, and professionalism. At a future date, we will re-evaluate the decision to suspend our participation in NCAA competition.

We will be honoring all athletic scholarships for our New York Tech student-athletes so that they can continue with their academic programs and graduate on schedule.

Going forward, we will focus on student health and wellness initiatives and on enhancing academics and the student experience with additional club and intramural sports that will be accessible to the broadest range of students possible.

Sincerely,

Hank Foley, Ph.D.
President, New York Institute of Technology
