Improving Student Success

For Academic Departments

New York Tech applies Deming’s Model for Continuous Improvement to our practice of improving student success, and it is designed according to the following process and policy.

Process and Policy

  1. Define the program’s educational goals pertaining to student success at their program level.
  2. Select appropriate key performance indicators (KPIs) for each of the goals that can accurately measure the performance, motivate and direct actions, and identify opportunities for improvement.
  3. Apply W. Edwards Deming’s improvement model to develop, test, and implement changes for improvement.
  4. Hold an annual departmental review and planning meeting and focus departmental energy and effort on a couple of key performance areas each year to make CPI a sustained and manageable process.
  5. The institution rewards improvement with recognition on CPI Day and provides resources for qualified projects (see financially supported CPI below).
