Peer Tutor Job Description
Our tutoring position for students is a paid, flexible, on-campus job opportunity that will enhance your leadership skills. Under the supervision of the Learning Center staff, tutors are responsible for the following:
Responsibilities
- Tutoring individual and/or small group sessions.
- Preparing appropriate materials and exercises for tutoring sessions.
- Monitoring student progress.
- Maintaining accurate timesheets.
- Accurately reporting on sessions in a timely manner.
- Participating in Learning Center staff meetings and training sessions.
- Other duties as assigned by learning center staff.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled at New York Tech as an undergraduate student with at least two semesters.
- A or A- grade in the subject(s) and course(s) qualified to tutor.
- Cumulative GPA of 3.5.
- Ability to work remotely for virtual tutoring sessions.
- Dependable, patient, and compassionate personality.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to attend mandatory tutor training(s) and workshops (may occur in person).
- For in-person tutoring:
- Ability to offer at least one hour of availability for on-campus appointments at the Learning Center.
- For online tutoring:
- Device requirements: laptop, computer, iPad/tablet which can connect to audio/video.
- Strong, reliable wifi connection during tutoring hours.
Application Process
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and hiring is based on need. We cannot guarantee hiring within a given semester. Be sure to read the job details and qualifications above, in full, before applying.
How to Apply
- Complete the Undergraduate Peer Tutor Application form. (You will be required to submit your most recent and updated resume within the form.)
- Request a recommendation from a faculty member by sharing this link: Faculty Recommendation form. (No more than two recommendations are required.)
Hiring and Training
- Upon receipt of the documentation above, qualified candidates for in-demand courses may be invited for an interview, at which point we may require additional academic transcripts and a resume.
- If offered the position, the student must fill out all required paperwork with the Learning Center supervisor and the Career Services office.
- Peer Tutors must complete an online training course for new tutors, and attend any other workshops or training as necessary.
Become a CRLA Certified Tutor
Once you become a peer tutor, the International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) provides several levels of certifications for college tutor training programs, since 1989. These programs have recognized thousands as Certified Tutors, Certified Advanced Tutors, or Certified Master Tutors.
Steps to Achieve CRLA Level 1 Certification

CRLA is a global group of professionals who focus on helping college students succeed in their academic journey. Active in the fields of reading, learning assistance, developmental education, and tutorial services at the college level, CRLA’s members promote the implementation of innovative strategies to enhance student learning. The organization plays a crucial role in creating a space where ideas, techniques, and knowledge is shared to support the professional development of its members.
Complete the following steps to be eligible for Level 1 Certification:
- Be Currently Employed as a Peer Tutor: Current Peer Tutors employed at the New York Tech Learning Center are eligible to be certified. If you’re not a Peer Tutor yet, follow the application process above.
- Complete at Least 10 Hours of Training: A minimum of 10 hours of mandatory tutor training will be provided through certified training modules, in-person group sessions, and one-on-one meetings with your supervisors. Trainings are offered in both the fall and spring semesters.
- Conduct at Least 25 Hours of Tutoring: A minimum of 25 hours of tutoring sessions may be conducted online or in person through the Learning Center Peer Tutoring Program. Sessions must be completed within the same academic year as training.
- Attend Supervision and Evaluation Meetings: During regular supervision and evaluation meetings, your direct supervisor will discuss your training and assess how you are integrating the acquired knowledge into your tutoring sessions. They will also address any challenges you may encounter and provide guidance towards enhancing your performance as a tutor
