Our 15-credit Advanced Certificate in Mental Health Counseling program is designed to help certified school counselors transition to becoming licensed mental health counselors (LMHC). This program also serves mental health professionals with 48-credit degrees, providing the additional coursework needed to meet the 60-credit requirement for LMHC licensure in New York State.
Our curriculum equips you with the skills to provide individual, group, and family therapy, as well as health counseling, career planning, crisis intervention, and more. You’ll gain practical experience in various settings, including social services agencies, mental health agencies, substance abuse programs, and health-related facilities. The program emphasizes social justice, cultural sensitivity, and technological awareness, ensuring you’re prepared to meet the evolving needs of the human services landscape.
As a graduate, you’ll be prepared to sit for the National Clinical Mental Health Counselor Examination (NCMHCE) and practice under a limited permit, supervised by a licensed mental health professional. You’ll develop competencies in advocacy, clinical assessments, counseling techniques, ethical and legal standards, and treatment planning. This advanced certificate not only bridges the gap to LMHC licensure but also enhances your existing skills as a practicing school counselor.

As with our other counseling programs, the program admits for summer and fall semesters only with admissions taking place between February and August.
Students enrolling in this program should be current professionals who are already certified and/or licensed counselors. Students must have a previous certification or license in order to enter the program.
There is no application deadline; however, ordering transcripts can take several weeks, and it is important to make sure you apply with enough time for all of your documents to be received, your application to be reviewed, and if admitted, for you to register before the semester begins, so please plan accordingly.
Admission Requirements
- B.S. degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university
- Certification (or licensure) as a school counselor in any state or licensure as a professional counselor (including rehabilitation, drug/alcohol, and higher education/student affairs), mental health counselor, clinical mental health counselor, or other mental health professional in any state.
Application Materials
- Completed application
- $50 nonrefundable application fee
- Copies of undergraduate transcripts and graduate transcripts, if applicable, for all schools attended. All final, official transcripts must be received prior to the start of your first semester.
- Copy of college diploma or proof of degree
- Copies of teaching certificates you currently hold if you are seeking New York State certification
- International student requirements: English proficiency, I-20, and transcript evaluation
- New York Education Law permits nonresident aliens to qualify for an initial license. If you have United States Citizenship or Permanent Resident status, you may qualify for a Permanent or Professional New York State Teaching Certificate.
Deadlines
Applications are reviewed on a rolling admission basis, as long as space is available.
