About Nursing

What is Nursing? 

Nursing is a profession historically grounded in the pursuit of excellence, lifelong learning, and patient advocacy. Nurses serve on the front lines of healthcare—in hospitals, private practice, schools, community clinics, and rehabilitation centers to bring health and wellness to their patients. 

Mission 

The mission of the Department of Nursing is to provide excellence in nursing education from a transcultural perspective, extend access to opportunity to members of underrepresented groups in nursing, and expand knowledge in the nursing profession with an emphasis on transcultural study. The Department of Nursing prepares students to provide nursing care in varied settings and to assume community and institutional roles that meet the needs of a global society.

Goals and Expected Outcomes

  • Students demonstrate the competencies defined by the program’s student learning outcomes, which are in concert with The Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice. 
  • The performance of graduates on the NCLEX-RN licensure exam will be at or exceed the New York State average score (75 percent), and meet the benchmark of CCNE (first-time passing rate at 80 percent). 
  • The Department of Nursing prepares undergraduate students to sit for the NCLEX-RN examination. For those students eligible to take the NCLEX-RN for the first time in 2023, the overall pass rate was 86.84 percent.

  • Faculty demonstrates excellence in teaching and fulfill their responsibilities in advising and student evaluation. 
  • Faculty participates in professional developmental activities to improve instructional strategies and utilize innovative technologies that enhance student learning. 
  • Faculty demonstrates a record of scholarly accomplishments that meet university and accreditation standards for scholarship, including the demonstration of well-articulated scholarly agendas. 
  • Faculty fulfills their responsibilities in community, professional, and university service activities.

  • Respond to professional and community needs. 
  • Sustain and enlarge quality clinical practice sites and engage them to facilitate students’ learning. 
  • Recruit qualified students with diverse backgrounds for admission to the program, so that they will understand and serve the diversified community better. 
  • Meet the benchmarks of CCNE in completion rate, employment rate, and overall satisfaction with the program.

Transcultural Nursing

Transcultural nursing provides a holistic approach to team-based patient-centered care while respecting personal beliefs, experiences, and values. This approach is essential when treating patients in today’s world, which is more globally and culturally diverse than ever. Here, you’ll adopt a transcultural mindset—when learning in our classrooms, working in our high-tech labs, and practicing in clinical settings. Upon graduation, you’ll be able to treat patients from a wide spectrum of clinical populations and practice settings.
