Experiential Learning for Students

Riyaz Akhtar Experiential Education Program combines hands-on experience with focused reflection, applying classroom lessons to practical situations that develop and strengthen your critical expertise.

Immerse yourself in business environments, resolve challenging issues, and participate in research and technological development activities that prepare you for the real world of business.

  • Compete in various global and local business challenges.
  • Develop civic responsibility and social ethics.
  • Participate in internships and gain practicum experiences where you’ll work with business leaders and gain valuable industry experience.
  • Develop new technology and integrate it with business and management courses.
  • Assist local community members in filing their tax forms.
  • Gain an understanding of global and local business, economic, marketing, and cultural issues through visits to other countries and states.

How Many Experiential Education Points Do I Need?

We encourage you to participate in as many experiential education activities as possible to fully develop your professional skills.

You’re required to complete at least one documented activity (either credit or non-credit activity) from the list below as a part of fulfilling the degree requirements for a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Experiential Education Activities

Riyaz Akhtar Experiential Education Program organizes both credit-bearing and non-credit-bearing experiential education activities in fall, spring, and summer. These are typically semester-long activities.

Credit Bearing Activities

Professor Deborah Y. Cohn Engages Students In Academic Service Learning

Combine community service with classroom instruction to get a deeper understanding of civic responsibility and social ethics. By working directly with nonprofit companies, students gain a deeper understanding of civic responsibility, social ethics, and applied business concepts.

Work with fellow New York Tech students and executives from Broadridge Financial Solutions, a leading consulting firm offering technology-based solutions to the global financial services industry, to explore business solutions and recommend strategies. (BUISE 404 or BUSIE 701)

Research and analyze economic data, develop a forecast and ascertain risks, and formulate monetary policy in this competition sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. (BUSIE 402)

Travel the world and participate in business simulations with students from different countries. Gain multicultural perspectives as you collaborate and make entrepreneurial decisions for a global marketplace. Undergraduate business students with an interest in management, economics, finance, marketing, and human resources are eligible to apply. (BUSIE 401)

Get hands-on experience and a feel for corporate culture. See how professionals operate in the fast-paced global marketplace. Participate in real-world projects, build your professional network, and put your education into practice. You may take an internship for credit or on a no-credit basis. (catalog course 290, 390, 495, or 620, 625, 650)

Work on an actual corporate project in the field with other New York Tech students under the supervision of our faculty members. Develop real business solutions, make presentations to clients, and assess project outcomes. (BUSIE 702)

Immerse yourself in the cultural landscape of other nations. Choose from three different programs that give you the experiences to boost your foreign language skills, understand regional economies, and help transform yourself into a global executive. (BUSIE 410 or BUSIE 700)

Non-Credit Bearing Activities

Tackle the real-world problems of a local New York business while competing with other School of Management students for awards, scholarships, and cash prizes.

Enhance your professional, entrepreneurial, and leadership skills while working with a School of Management faculty member to devise real-world business solutions with local businesses, student peers, and community partners. Get paid while receiving valuable mentorship and priceless work experience.

Or collaborate with New York Tech faculty members and get your work published in a peer-reviewed industry publication and in SOURCE.

Global Dispute Resolution Competition provides a platform to bring global students together to analyze conflicts or disputes between states, countries, societies, and businesses with other student colleagues, and recommend negotiation strategies to resolve the conflicts.

The High School Students Business Competition allows high school (junior and senior) students to interact with top-level company leadership and to address emerging issues faced by companies inside and outside their business environment.

Team up with peers as you step into the role of a Wall Street trader and manage a stock portfolio with real money. You’ll analyze market trends, devise investment strategies, and make recommendations to a board of financial executives.

Okay, it’s time for you to show us how you’d improve the School of Management using the latest technology! Present your ideas in short lectures to faculty members alongside fellow classmates as you earn certificates and compete for cash prizes.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program supports local community members who require assistance to prepare and submit their own tax returns. Student volunteers will be certified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to participate in the program and provide free income tax return preparation services.
