Placement Exams and Advisement
To help you get started on the right path of your academic journey, we ask all new students to meet with an Undergraduate Academic Advisor before registering for classes. To ensure you’re placed in the course that best fits your skills, some students will need to complete a math learning assessment prior to meeting with an advisor.
Visit your Admissions Portal to see if you are required to complete the math learning assessment.
Math Placement Exam
Most undergraduate students are required to take the ALEKS Math Placement and Learning Plan to determine your math level. You do not need to take it if you meet any of the below criteria:
- Receiving placement or transfer credit for the first math course required for your degree.
- Admitted into the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). You will take the exam, if required, on an individual basis.
- Admitted into the Life Sciences, B.S./Osteopathic Medicine, D.O. (B.S./D.O.) program. You will be contacted about B.S./D.O. next steps for enrollment directly.
Check your Admissions Portal in the Next Steps tab for instructions on how to get started.
New York Tech evaluates student’s math readiness using the ALEKS Math Placement and Learning Plan. It is a personalized learning platform that adapts to you. First, it assesses your initial math placement along with specific strengths and growth areas. Then, it gives you a personalized learning pathway that includes lessons to help you improve. Log in regularly, use the practice exercises, and retake the assessment for an opportunity to place into a higher level math course. The best part is that you can do this at your own pace throughout the summer!
The good news is that you don’t have to study for this exam because you’ll have an opportunity to practice and improve your scores through the learning modules.
You will have up to two hours to complete a placement assessment once it has begun (but it may not take you that much time).
You will need access to the internet with an updated browser. Before you log into the ALEKS Math Placement and Learning Plan, you will need to download the Respondus Lockdown Browser software. Review ALEKS system requirements.
- On the Respondus Lockdown Browser, log in to your ALEKS Math Placement and Learning Plan and enter your New York Tech username and password.
- Follow the initial prompts to access the PPL (it’s a few quick steps)
- Complete the quick Tools Tutorial (this will show you how to answer questions in the platform)
- Take the Initial Assessment
- Continue to work in the Prep & Learning Module to improve your knowledge and skills (ALEKS will provide you with customized topics based on your performance)
- You can take the assessment up to 4 times. The first three learning preparation modules require at minimum 3 hours of practice at your pace and a rest period of 24 hours before you take the next assessment. However, before you complete the 4th assessment, you’ll need to complete a minimum of 5 hours of practice and a rest period of 24 hours before you take the next assessment.
Your scores on the Initial Assessment will be used to determine the first math course you’ll be enrolled in for your first semester.
You can continue to work through the learning modules to improve your placement prior to the start of the semester. Your advisor will connect with you if your assessment scores improve to place you into a higher course and a schedule change is needed.
Please complete the Initial Assessment as early as possible to allow ample time to use the learning modules and to take the reassessment. The earlier you complete the assessment, the earlier you can meet with your advisor.
You will have access to practice using the ALEKS learning modules for one year after your initial assessment. Be sure to utilize these resources as an added advantage to your learning in your first math course at New York Tech.
