Department of Biomedical Sciences
Message from the Chair
Welcome. I have been associated with eight medical schools during my career, with reputations ranging across the spectrum. Having served as a department chair or institute director for about 30 years, I have had an unusual opportunity to see what works and what does not work from the inside.
After being here for more than ten years, I can honestly say that NYITCOM is the best place I have been. Faculty are dedicated to providing lifelong learning skills to our students. Research quality, breadth, and productivity have improved dramatically within the department, providing a broad array of new research opportunities for our students. I am excited about the future of medicine and am confident that our students will be well-prepared for it.
A. Martin Gerdes, Ph.D.
Chair, Department of Biomedical Sciences
Mission
The Department of Biomedical Sciences is committed to instilling lifelong learning skills in our students while advancing basic and translational medical research discoveries.
Research
Our research explores a wide range of scientific disciplines, including biochemistry, histology, microbiology, molecular biology, and related fields. We focus on critical areas of study, such as cancer, cardiovascular health, diabetes, neuroscience, Parkinson’s disease, and renal function. By investigating these areas, we aim to advance our understanding and contribute to the development of innovative treatments and solutions.
Departmental Seminar Series
The Biomedical Sciences Seminars are a series of expert-led talks focused on discussing new, clinically relevant research in medicine. They are held in person at Rockefeller Auditorium and are also accessible via Zoom, free and open to everyone.
