About NYITCOM-Arkansas
New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine’s location on the Jonesboro campus of Arkansas State University (NYITCOM-Arkansas) is more than a medical school. We have a focused mission of training physicians to address the significant healthcare and health education needs in one of the most medically underserved regions of the country.
In addition to our Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, D.O. program, we also offer a Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences degree and a Master of Public Health degree on our Arkansas campus.

New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) on Long Island and NYITCOM-Arkansas, in Jonesboro, Ark., share the same mission, vision, and outcomes. At both sites, faculty and staff members are committed to training osteopathic physicians for a lifetime of learning and practice, based upon the integration of evidence-based knowledge, critical thinking, and the tenets of osteopathic principles and practice.
In addition to our shared mission, NYITCOM-Arkansas is dedicated to improving access to healthcare for the underserved and rural populations in Arkansas and the Mississippi Delta Region. Arkansas ranks 48th in overall population health status due to low health indicators including obesity and the number of adults who smoke. The state also ranks 46th in the number of active physicians per capita, and 39th in the number of primary care physicians. It is our mission to meet the need for more physicians in this medically underserved area.

A Unique Setting
Our presence on an undergraduate campus provides our medical students with many amenities not often found at medical schools. NYITCOM students have access to on-campus housing, the A-State Red WOLF fitness center, and convenient dining and refreshment options, including a full-service Starbucks just steps from NYITCOM’s Wilson Hall. A-State’s Dean B. Ellis Library is also a popular study location among NYITCOM students.
Training Physician Leaders
Graduating great physicians who practice excellent medicine is an expectation. However, that’s not enough. We believe it is a privilege to be a physician, and with great privilege comes great responsibility. NYITCOM emphasizes servant leadership, and our student doctors are actively involved in a number of community-based programs aimed at benefitting those in the state and region while showing our medical students the unique opportunities that exist to make a tremendous impact in a special part of the country.
NYITCOM is not just another medical school. Our faculty, staff, and students see ourselves as change agents for generations in a part of the nation with needs unlike any other. Meet Our Jonesboro Students
Curriculum
- NYITCOM-Arkansas is among the first medical schools in the United States to train first-year students to deliver care via telemedicine (the use of telecommunication and information technology to provide clinical healthcare from a distance).
- Each student must complete a four-week rotation in a rural area.
- The majority of third- and fourth-year rotations will occur in community hospitals, including NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital and St. Bernard’s Medical Center.
- In addition to a medical degree, every graduate from NYITCOM-Arkansas earns a Certificate in Population Health. Students also have the opportunity to obtain certificates in Telemedicine, Health IT, Evidence-based Medicine, or Global Health.
- Students can also apply for the Academic Medicine Scholars Program, in which they earn an additional Master of Science in Academic Medicine. These select second-year NYITCOM-Arkansas students are given faculty mentorship while spending an extra year gaining valuable research and teaching experience.
- Students also have the opportunity to gain valuable clinical training in a future mobile medical clinic known as the Delta Care-a-van. The mobile clinic travels to areas of northeast Arkansas and offers preventative care services and health education, under the guidance of NYITCOM-Arkansas faculty and trained medical experts, to underserved and rural populations.
History
New York Tech College of Osteopathic Medicine traces its roots to the 1970s and W. Kenneth Riland, D.O., and a group of visionary osteopathic physicians. Read more.
In 2012, A-State approached New York Institute of Technology with the idea of establishing an NYITCOM program at the A-State campus aimed at producing physicians in generalist specialties (family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, general surgery, emergency medicine, and obstetrics/gynecology), who would practice in the medically underserved areas of Arkansas and the Mississippi Delta region. NYITCOM developed the partnership as part of its overarching vision to advance patient-centered, population-based osteopathic healthcare through transformative education and illuminating research.
In August 2016, NYITCOM-Arkansas welcomed its inaugural class of 115 medical students. Housed in the 86,000 square-foot Wilson Hall, facilities include a state-of-the-art anatomy lab, team-based teaching labs, an auditorium, an osteopathic manipulative lab, a medical library, a student lounge, simulation labs, and classrooms outfitted with technology for in-person and two-way live streaming of lectures between the Arkansas and New York campuses.
NYITCOM-Arkansas has enjoyed a 100 percent post-graduate placement rate, with 70 percent of its graduates pursuing primary care specialties (Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, General Surgery, and Psychiatry). Additionally, Arkansas campus alumni have been very successful in competitive specialties with several graduates matching into Anesthesiology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery, Radiology, Urology, Neurology, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Emergency Medicine, and Dermatology.
The New York campus is accredited for 295 students per year, while the Arkansas campus is accredited for 115 students annually.
