The program is designed for individuals who have earned a bachelor’s degree and want to become teachers in grades 1–6.
Learn to nurture children’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development, as well as how to successfully integrate technology into all aspects of teaching and learning.
New York Tech’s emphasis on diversity ensures that you’ll develop culturally responsive teaching practices and can work with diverse student populations—skills that are in great demand.
Upon graduation, you’ll be eligible for New York State certification as a teacher of Childhood Education, grades 1-6. In many instances, New York State certification can be applied toward requirements for teaching certification in other states. In addition, our graduates experience high success rates on New York State certification examinations (NYSTCE).

What You’ll Learn

Bilingual Extension
Become certified to teach English Language Learners (ELLs) in a bilingual setting with a few additional courses and supervised field experiences in a bilingual setting.
Teacher Certification
New York Tech facilitates your pathway to certification, which is required in New York State for all teachers, administrators, school counselors, psychologists, and more.
DASA Workshops
Applicants for a New York State teacher certification are required to complete six hours of training supporting the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA), which seeks to provide public elementary and secondary school students with a safe and supportive environment.
Building Leadership for Teachers
New York Tech’s “Building Leadership for Teachers” (BLT) online micro-credential program provides K-12 educators with a new, flexible, and less time-intensive approach to professional development.

To be eligible to apply to the Childhood Education, M.S. program, you’ll need:
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited institution in biology, chemistry, economics, English, history, life science, math, physics, or psychology
- A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0
- To have completed specific general education requirements in the liberal arts and sciences
To apply, submit the following:
- Online application
- Personal statement: Why do you want to become an elementary teacher?
- Two letters of recommendation
- Immunization form
- $50 application fee
- Official copies of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts
- An interview with the program chair, which may be held electronically
The Master of Science in Childhood Education program at New York Institute of Technology is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). CAEP is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit programs for the preparation of teachers and other professional school personnel.
The Childhood Education, M.S. program has also received national recognition from the Childhood Education International (CEI).
