Estimated Costs of Attending New York Tech
Cost of Attendance
The Cost of Attendance is an average of reasonable education-related expenses. We understand that some students may have needs greater than what we include. Any student who feels that they need more assistance may request an adjustment to the cost of attendance that meets federal Title IV regulations issued by the Department of Education. The student will be required to provide proper documentation for any adjustments to be considered.
All budget increases must be pre-approved by the Office of Financial Aid. Please be aware that an increase in your budget may result in additional borrowing eligibility. If you have any questions regarding this process, please contact us at finaid@nyit.edu.
The Cost of Attendance includes:
- Tuition and fees
- On-campus housing and food (or a housing and food allowance for off-campus students)
- Allowances for books, supplies, transportation, and loan fees
- Dependent care (if applicable)
- Miscellaneous and personal expenses, including an allowance for the rental or purchase of a personal computer
- Reasonable costs for eligible study-abroad programs
Costs related to a disability are covered.
For students attending less than half-time, the COA includes tuition and fees, and an allowance for food, books, course materials, supplies and equipment, transportation, and dependent care expenses (upon request). Contact the Office of Financial Aid if you have unusual expenses that might affect your cost of attendance.

Living Expense Allowance Calculation
Students often ask how we calculate the living expense allowance in the estimated cost of attendance for an academic year. There are several answers, depending on your dependency status, permanent address, and housing plans for the academic year.
When we talk about a living allowance, we are referring to one of the following:
- The average cost of a room in a residence hall and a meal plan for on-campus residents
- The average cost of rent and food for someone living in an apartment
- An allowance for local students who are living in their parent’s home
These expenses are treated separately:
- An allowance for books (depending on major)
- “Miscellaneous expenses” allowance (for full-time undergraduates)
- Transportation allowance based on an average mileage amount and a student’s living arrangement (on- or off-campus)
Notes
- Tuition and fees listed are estimated on approved rates for the 2024–2025 academic year. For more information, please see the complete tuition and cost amounts for undergraduates and graduate students.
- The on-campus housing estimate is based on the average cost of a standard double room for Long Island or New York City residence halls. These costs may vary depending on the room you choose. Your individual Cost of Attendance may be adjusted upon request with proper documentation.
- With Parent housing estimates are based on the Consumer Price Index.
- Off-campus housing is estimated based on average rentals from five local areas. Formula = nine months of average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Long Island, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, and Manhattan.
- Food costs are estimated based on the Official U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Plans.
- A Miscellaneous/Personal Expense Allowance is only applicable to students attending on at least a half-time basis. Although your actual expenses may vary, these estimates should help you plan a budget.
- Transportation estimate for New York City campus and on-campus residents is based on monthly Metrocard purchases over a nine-month period. Long Island off-campus estimate was calculated using the IRS (2025) standard mileage rate of $0.70 per mile for a round trip of 30 miles to/from New York Tech for 30 weeks, 5 days per week. This represents the average estimated annual transportation cost for a full-time student.
