Help students discover their passions through the flexible Adolescence Education, M.A.T. program, leading to eligibility to teach middle and/or high school in English, biology, chemistry, physics, math, or social studies. Pursue your degree online or in a blended format, either full- or part-time.

Ideal for working professionals and adult learners, the Adolescence Education (Initial/Professional Cert), M.A.T. is offered in multiple formats—including fully online—and on both a full- and part-time basis, to prepare you to become a certified New York State middle or high school teacher on your schedule.
Learn to nurture students’ cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development in a caring, creative, technology-driven learning environment with faculty committed to excellence. You can earn your high school teaching certification at an accelerated pace with our Accelerated (4+1) program. Specialize in math, physics, biology, chemistry, English, or social studies, in your undergraduate studies; start taking education graduate courses in your junior and senior years; and finish with both your bachelor’s and master’s degrees in just five years.
Upon graduation, you’ll be eligible for New York State certification as a teacher of Adolescent Education, Grades 7-12 in math, physics, chemistry, biology, social studies, or English. In many instances, New York State certification can be applied to requirements for teaching certification in other states. In addition, our graduates experience high success rates on New York State certification examinations (NYSTCE).

Bilingual Extension
Become certified to teach English Language Learners (ELLs) in a bilingual setting with a few additional courses and supervised field experiences in a bilingual setting.
Teacher Certification
New York Tech facilitates your pathway to certification, which is required in New York State for all teachers, administrators, school counselors, psychologists, and more.
DASA Workshops
Applicants for a New York State teacher certification are required to complete six hours of training supporting the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA), which seeks to provide public elementary and secondary school students with a safe and supportive environment.
Building Leadership for Teachers
New York Tech’s “Building Leadership for Teachers” (BLT) online micro-credential program provides K-12 educators with a new, flexible, and less time-intensive approach to professional development.
Accelerated (4+1) Dual Degree
Earn your high school teaching certification at an accelerated pace with New York Tech’s 4+1 Program, obtaining both your undergraduate and graduate degrees in just five years.

To be eligible to apply to the Adolescence Education (Initial/Professional Cert), M.A.T. program, you’ll need:
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited institution in English, biology, chemistry, physics, math, social studies
- A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0
- To have completed specific general education requirements in the liberal arts and sciences
- Satisfactory command of spoken and written English
To apply, submit the following:
- Online application, $50 application fee
- Personal statement: Why do you want to become a secondary teacher?
- Two letters of recommendation
- Official copies of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts
- An interview with the program chair, which may be held electronically

New York Tech’s Adolescent Education, M.A.T. program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) for programs that prepare teachers and school leaders.
